BLACK TAILED NATIVE HEN Gallinula ventralis

I love their bright yellow eyes green and red beak and red legs
Life amongst the rushes
How is it that you always find the best thing at the last minute when you really can't dally one moment longer .
This is what happened on the day when my friend and I came across the little native hens above.
We had just turned around to return to the car when we heard a rustling sound in the rushes followed by a plonking sound in water then the barley perceptible sound of more rustling, we looked at one another and as one began to stalk the sounds, suddenly there was a whir of wings and more sploshes a bit further away and to our great pleasure we could finally see our quarry, Black Tailed Native Hens.
Black Tailed Native Hens are about the size of a chicken you might have in your backyard and are quite a colourful bird, their legs are bright red  the eyes are a stunning yellow and the beak has a green upper and red on the lower side and the chest feathers are a beautiful dark blue.
I have seen these nomads in large flocks and have read that they follow the rain so may not be seen in some areas for years at a time. They are a nervous bird and disappear into the undergrowth quietly . There is nothing funnier that a flock of them running and then only when they really have to taking to flight
