Walk on Water Spider

After a long, hot and dry summer, places with water were a bit scarce so we were pleasantly surprised to find this dam full and surrounded with lots of green.  There were peppercorn trees and even a palm tree or two along with an ancient water tank leaning precariously on it's wooden stand.  Reminders of  settler's long past and of their high hopes. It is a green oasis in a red and grey landscape.

It was a great place to drink our coffee and watch hundreds of Dragon and Damselfly's dancing flight over the  water. I set myself the task of trying to capture some photos of these beauties in flight and before long I spied this beautifully marked spider floating on a piece of wood.  I had only taken a few shots when a cute tiny green eyed Damselfly alighted nearby and in a flash the spider pounced on the unsuspecting creature.
Previously we had observed many leaves floating on the water that were being used as resting places for both the Dragon and Damselfly's and of course these spiders would be well aware of this.
I think this spider may be from the  Dolomedes genus.   I couldn't find one exactly the same as mine but I did find that these little fellows have one or two tricks up their sleeves.
Firstly they can walk on water and if threatened or hot, climb down a reed or branch submerged under water and survived on trapped air bubbles for an hour or so. Members of this genus are found all over the world and go by many names Raft, Fishing spider to name a few .
